The 2021 AFL Grand Final: Melbourne v Western Bulldogs
After sitting on top of the table for the first 10 rounds, the much anticipated Western Bulldogs v Melbourne clash was played in front of an empty Marvel Stadium. Again a few weeks later the two teams played in front of a crowdless MCG. With the Grand Final moved to Perth’s Optus Stadium for the first time, tickets sold out quickly.
For three quarters, the contest was one of the tightest and most engaging in recent grand final memory. In the first quarter, the Demons looked dominant and raced out of the blocks, kicking four goals to one in the first quarter. They could have been further in front. The Bulldogs got the start they needed to the second quarter with two quick goals to Treloar. An impressive quarter by Bontempelli had the Dogs in front by 8 points at half time.
After the break the Bulldogs slowed the game down and controlled the ball. Bontempelli stretched the lead to 19 points halfway through the third quarter.
But then the match changed quickly with Fritsch, Petracca and Oliver involved and Melbourne went from 19 points down to 24 points in front at 3/4 time with all the momentum. The last quarter was simply a celebration for Melbourne as they ended a 65 year premiership drought in emphatic style.
