History of the Melbourne v Richmond rivalry

Curiously Richmond and Melbourne have only met in two finals matches. In 1940 the Demons defeated the Tigers in the Grand Final, the second of three consecutive premierships for Melbourne.

In 1965 Richmond moved to the MCG to play its home games and were scheduled to play its first home at the MCG in the opening round of the season, against reigning premier and now ground co-tenant Melbourne. The match took place on the Easter Monday holiday, April 19, before a crowd of 36,282, in soaking rain. In a tough, tense last quarter, the Demons held off the Tigers for a six point win.

A new tradition began in 2015 with the first ANZAC Day Eve match. As part of the pre-match ceremonies a torch lit from the Eternal Flame at the Shrine of Remembrance is carried to the ground on horseback, where it lights a cauldron on an MCG stage to burn for the duration of the match. The ceremony honours both our past and current serving members of the Australian Defence Force. Players from both sides, including coaches and officials, alongside returned servicemen and women, line up near the flame for the playing of the Last Post and National Anthem. Ron Barassi, whose father died at Tobruk during World War 2 lit the cauldron in 2015.
