History of the Collingwood v Melbourne rivalry
A traditional white collar (Melbourne) v blue collar (Collingwood) rivalry, this was the greatest rivalry in the VFL during the 1950s and 1960s. Having won the 1955, 1956 and 1957 premierships, only a narrow loss to Collingwood in the 1958 Grand Final stopped Melbourne from winning a fourth flag in a row in 1958. This meant Collingwood 1927-1930 are still the only team to have won four consecutive premierships. Half of Melbourne's twelve premierships came against Collingwood and the teams have met in seven grand finals, the most of any pairing.
Football has been played on the Queen’s or King’s Birthday holiday since 1897 with the first Melbourne v Collingwood Queen’s Birthday match in 1898. On June 16, 1958 a record home and away season crowd of 99,256 saw a top of the table match between the two teams where Melbourne defeated Collingwood by 11 points. The Demons were coached by Norm Smith. The leading goal kickers were Collingwood’s Ian Brewer with six, and Melbourne’s Ian Ridley with five. Ronald Dale Barassi kicked three goals. Since 2001, Melbourne has hosted Collingwood in an annual match at the MCG on the Queen's Birthday public holiday Monday in June. 2019 will be the first time that Collingwood will host this clash on Queen’s Birthday since 1999.
In 2014, former Melbourne coach Neale Daniher was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and set about helping raise funds for researching the disease. The Big Freeze at the G is a MND fundraiser event at the Queen's Birthday match. In support of the "Cure for MND Foundation", several well known football and television personalities get dunked into a giant ice pool before the start of the game. Such personalities usually pledge to raise $10,000 for vital MND research after being nominated, and once successful at hitting this target, they then get to pass on the challenge and nominate the next personality into the "cold seat". This person in turn will raise funds and agree to "Freeze for MND" if their fundraising goal is met. The challenge will continue right up until the game, with each celebrity challenging the next.
The Golden Ticket will donate $10 from every Queen’s Birthday match ticket or dining package sold directly to Fight MND.
