The 2000 AFL Grand Final - Melbourne v Essendon
The Bombers dominated season 2000 only losing one match before thrashing the Kangaroos by 125 points in the Qualifying Final and comfortably beating rivals Carlton in the Preliminary Final. The Demons finished third and were outsiders against Carlton, winning a close match by 9 points. A 50 point Preliminary Final win over the Kangaroos had the Demons into their first Grand Final in 12 years.
Both teams started nervously with Melbourne captain David Neitz hitting the post, and the Bombers though kicking inaccurately went into quarter time with an 11 point lead. After quarter time Essendon piled on a few goals and extended their lead. A brawl erupted when Melbourne’s Troy Simmonds was hit high by Essendon’s Michael Long. The Bombers put the result beyond doubt in the third quarter extending their lead to 57 points at three quarter time before running the game out 10 goal winners. Paul Barnard and Matthew Lloyd both kicked 4 goals for the Bombers
