History of the Collingwood v Carlton rivalry
Argued by some to be the greatest and longest standing rivalry in the competition, games between these two clubs regularly attract large crowds regardless of whether they are in finals contention or not.
One of the originals and still clearly ranked as the best. For more than a century, Carlton and Collingwood fans have disliked each other almost from birth. No teams have played more games against each other and no teams have played in as heated or bitter finals matches. Just take the 1910 Grand Final brawl or the 1945 ‘bloodbath before the Bloodbath’ preliminary final, for example. Then there was the most famous game of all, when Carlton came from 44 points down at half-time to change football and win the 1970 flag. Not to mention Blues president George Harris’ immortal line after the 1979 Grand Final — “What’s better than beating Collingwood by 10 goals? Beating them by five points.”
Two of the most famous lines of commentary come from these matches: “Jesaulenko - you beauty!” and “Harmes almost makes ground, he taps it back to Sheldon - it’s a goal!”
After former President of the Carlton Football Club and influential Melbourne businessperson Richard Pratt died in April 2009, both clubs announced that the following match between them would be played for the inaugural Richard Pratt Cup. Pratt died of prostate cancer and consequently the match is used to raise awareness of the disease. The inaugural Richard Pratt Cup between the rivals took place in Round 17 of the 2009 AFL season.
Since 2010, Carlton home matches are played for the Richard Pratt Cup
