History of the Essendon v Collingwood rivalry
Perhaps not as bitter as some rivalries, there is still some ill-feeling between Essendon and Collingwood. It goes back many years, but moments such as the John Somerville incident in the 1965 preliminary final have struck a chord. Then in more recent times, there was the quarter-time melee between the two teams in the 1990 Grand Final that involved officials on the ground at the time.
Since 1995 the two teams have met on ANZAC Day. The first match attracted 94,825 fans, but the gates were locked well before the first bounce with more than 20,000 fans unable to get into the MCG. This match is remembered as an all time classic. Collingwood led by 14 points at three quarter time, before Essendon took control early in the final term. When James Hird kicked a goal late in the quarter he put the Bombers 6 points in front. Sav Rocca levelled the scores a few minutes later with his ninth goal of the match. In the dying seconds Nathan Buckley was 60m out and could have attempted to score but he chose to pass to Rocca who was spoiled. The siren sounded seconds later on a fitting draw.
The traditional Anzac Day game is arguably the second biggest game of the season, but that’s more about respect than rivalry. Yet there is still some feeling between the Magpies and the Bombers whenever they meet.
The Golden Ticket will donate $10 from every ANZAC Day match ticket or dining package sold directly to the ANZAC Appeal.
