The 1997 AFL Grand Final: St Kilda v Adelaide
In an even season where 13th placed Richmond only missed the finals by half a game, St Kilda finished on top of the ladder with 15 wins and Adelaide secured 4th spot with just 13 wins. After a slow start to the season, only winning one of their first five matches, the Saints stormed into the Grand Final with comfortable finals win over Brisbane and reigning premier North Melbourne. After a Qualifying win over West Coast, the Crows narrowly defeated the Cats by 8 points and ran over the Dogs by just two points in the final minutes of the Preliminary Final.
This was a much anticipated Grand Final, the Saints first since 1971, and the first time the Crows had made it. Adelaide started with well with Shane Ellen kicking the first goal and were 2 points in front at quarter time. With strong performances by Robert Harvey, Austinn Jones and Nathan Burke, the Saints went to the main break with a 13 point lead. After half time, the Crows with Norm Smith Medalist Andrew McLeod starring took control of the third quarter and a 10 point lead at the final change. In the last quarter the Crows kicked eight straight goals, five of them coming from the boot of the mercurial Darren Jarman, as the Crows sealed their first premiership.
