The 1965 VFL Grand Final: Essendon v St Kilda
It took St Kilda 68 years to finish on top of the ladder, and a narrow one point win over Collingwood in the second semi final put the Saints into their first ever Grand Final. Essendon had recently won the premiership three years earlier and easily accounted for Geelong and Collingwood on their way to another Grand Final appearance.
Interestingly no team in this finals series scored more goals than behinds, and the Grand Final was no exception. Essendon 2.7-19 took a 7 point lead into quarter time over St Kilda 1.6-12. Both sides went goal for goal in the second quarter. The Bombers set up their win in the third quarter, scoring five goals to just one by the Saints. The Saints never threatened the Bombers in the last quarter and the Bombers ran out 35 point winners. Ted Fordham kicked seven goals for Essendon.b
