The 2015 AFL Grand Final: Hawthorn v West Coast
West Coast comfortably accounted for Hawthorn in the Qualifying Final, with the Eagles enjoying the week off before knocking off the Kangaroos in the Preliminary Final after recovering from a slow start. The Hawks went round the long way, thumping the Crows in the Semi and returning to Perth to beat the Minor Premier Fremantle in a tough Preliminary Final.
98,632 people turned out for the hottest Grand Final on record, with the temperature reaching 31.3 degrees. Most people expected the hot weather to favour the Eagles being based in Perth. Luke Shuey kicked the opening goal for the Eagles but they wasted opportunites to kick another while Hawthorn took their chances with five straight goals, taking a 19 point lead into quarter time. The Hawks blew the game wide open in the second quarter with Luke Hodge kicking one of the greatest Grand Final goals from the boundary line followed by three more quick goals to put the Hawks 44 points in front. The Eagles kicked the last two goals of the quarter but were still 31 points down at the main break.
If the Eagles were to get back into the game they had to take their chances but missed opportunities by Shuey and Darling while the Hawks kicked truly gave the Hawks an unassailable 50 point lead at the final break. The Hawks started the last quarter with two more quick goals to effectively end the contest.
The 1991 AFL Grand Final: Hawthorn v West Coast
Hawthorn had played in seven of the previous eight Grand Finals while West Coast, in only their fifth season were in the first Grand Final. The Eagles hosted the Hawks in the Qualifying Final - the first final played outside Victoria. The Hawks upset the Eagles in front of a stunned Subiaco crowd, defeating the Cats the next week by 2 points to find themselves in another Grand Final. The Eagles recovered and accounted for Melbourne and Geelong to set up a another match against the Hawks. The 1991 AFL Grand Final was memorable for being the only Grand Final held at Waverley, and for Angry Anderson singing Bound For Glory from the back of the Batmobile.
In front of a crowd of 75,230 the Eagles made use of a strong breeze, with Peter Sumich kicking two goals from 50-metre penalties against Chris Langford. The Hawks got on top late in the quarter kicking three crucial goals into the wind reducing the Eagles lead to just 9 points at the first break. With the Hawks now kicking with the wind they raced to a 22 point lead before goals to Sumich and Lewis had the Eagles within 10 points at the main break.
The third quarter went goal for goal with Heady and Brereton both kicking multiple goals, and the Eagles found themselves still 10 points down at the three quarter time. Two early last quarter goals to Brereton and four goals to Dunstall saw the Hawks celebrate their ninth Premiership and a record seventh premiership for Hawthorn captain Michael Tuck.
