The 2010 AFL Grand Final Draw and Replay: Collingwood v St Kilda
Both sides had finished in the top four in 2009. St Kilda only a toe poke away from the 2009 Premiership. Collingwood had been the best team all season finishing on top of the ladder and easily accounting for the Bulldogs and the Cats. While St Kilda finished third on the ladder made their way through to the Grand Final with much narrower victories over the Cats and the Bulldogs.
Generally Collingwood had the better of the play early in the first quarter and were ahead on the scoreboard, though St Kilda with Lenny Hayes winning a lot of the ball brought the margin back to just 6 points at quarter time. Collingwood dominated the second quarter and would have been further in front if not for inaccuracy. The Saints scored just the solitary goal and went into the main break 24 points down. The Saints began to get on top after half time with Hayes and Goddard important players. The Magpies still had plenty of the play but only managed five behinds for the quarter and the Saints crept to within 8 points at the last change. The last quarter was full of highlights for both sides, Maxwell, Goddard and Hayes all prominent. At the 20 minute mark, Goddard took a spectacular mark and scored a goal to put St Kilda in front for the first time, Cloke regained the lead for Collingwood by one point at the 26 minute mark. In the dying minutes of the match a long kick from Hayes bounced away from Milne and through for a point levelling the scores. In the final minute of the match, St Kilda had the ball in its forward line but Collingwood cleared it to the wing. Seconds ticked down and the siren sounded.
The big question all week was how would the two teams recover and get up for the replay. The Magpies started well, while the Saints kicked inaccurately and found themselves 27 points down at half time. However this time the Saints didn’t come back. Collingwood were never headed running out 56 point victors.
The 1966 AFL Grand Final: Collingwood v St Kilda
This match needs no introduction. Twenty-five minutes into the final quarter and with scores level, Collingwood's Wayne Richardson had a shot at goal on the run but kicked it out of bounds on the full. St Kilda worked the ball out of defence. A kick from Ian Cooper saw the ball make its way to centre half forward. Collingwood defender Ted Potter failed to mark the ball and with the players desperately fighting for the ball a bounce was called. Brian Mynott won the tap for the Saints but it was intercepted by Potter who was quickly tackled. Potter managed to get out a hand pass but it found its way to St Kilda's Barry Breen who snapped at goal and kicked a behind to put his side in front. With less than a minute left on the clock, Collingwood were able to work the ball towards their forward line. Bob Murray, however, marked at centre half back and the siren sounded soon after.
Two famous pieces of commentary from the last quarter. Mike Williamson, who tipped a draw, shouting “I tipped this” when scores were level. And Ted Whitten urging the Saints to “Hit the boundary line” in the dying seconds of the match as the free kick for kicking the ball out of bounds on the full wasn’t introduced til 1969.
