The 1999 AFL Grand Final: North Melbourne v Carlton
Three teams dominated the 1999 season: North Melbourne, Brisbane and Essendon, and Carlton who had finished in sixth place found themselves in a Preliminary Final against the Minor Premier. The Bombers were red hot favourites in the Preliminary Final having won six more games than the Blues and inflicting on the Blues a humiliating 76 point defeat as recently as July. But with an amazing performance by Anthony Koutoufides it was to be Carltons day, a last minute tackle by Fraser Brown on Dean Wallis sealing a 1 point win for the Blues and setting up an unexpected Grand Final against the Kangaroos.
Brett Ratten scored the first goal of the match for Carlton, but from then on North Melbourne had control of play and went into quarter time with a 12 point lead. Carlton fought back in the second quarter with goals to Brown, Camporeale and Lappin and regained the lead. Two quick goals to Corey McKernan gave the momentum back to the Kangaroos and a 20 point half time lead. Carlton got back to within 13 points before goals to McKernan, Motlop and Bell meant the Kangaroos had a 43 point lead at three quarter time. Carlton never looked likely in the last quarter and the Kangaroos celebrated their fourth premiership.
