History of the Geelong v Essendon clash

Since 1980, these two clubs have met in the finals three times - two of them in 1989. The 1989 Qualifying Final saw Essendon upset the in form Geelong side by 76 points, two weeks later in a remarkable turnaround the Cats thumped the Bombers by 94 points in the Preliminary Final with Gary Ablett kicking 8 goals.

One of most talked about matches of the modern era was the Round 6 1993 match between these two sides. A high scoring affair with Paul Salmon kicking 10.6 and Gary Ablett kicking 14.7 in a losing side.

A number of notable players have represented both clubs: Paul Chapman, James Kelly, John Barnes, Tim Darcy, Mathew Stokes, Sean Denham, Justin Murphy, Glenn Kilpatrick, Stephen Carey, Andrew Rogers and Brent Prismall. And former Bombers player Mark Thompson coached both clubs.

This year will mark the seventh instalment of the Country Match, after being launched during the 2016 season. Kevin Sheedy (instrumental in the introduction of Country Round) sees it as a chance for Melbourne residents to connect with and appreciate their country neighbours, raising awareness and respect for the farmers who have been the backbone of the nation for 200 years.

A hotly contested battle between Essendon and Geelong, this game is increasingly popular and provides plenty of entertainment, both on and off the field.
